Staff Member of the Month - Ellen Petersen
What inspires you?
My students! They all have such unique takes on life and literature. Working with them makes me reflect on what I believe and what meaning I personally assign to the stories and poems we read in English classes
What’s a school sport or activity you enjoy watching and why?
Anything students are passionate about! It’s cool to see students doing things that are not related to my content area, things that drive them to be better!
If you were given a superlative when you were in school, what would it have been?
Best listening ear. I was rarely involved in drama, but when my friends were, they would talk to me about it. They would also tell me about their anxieties and worries, and felt better because I would just listen and reassure them.
What is your dream vacation?
I’d like to go back to Italy. I went on a trip there for 3 weeks in college, but I didn’t get to see some attractions that I wanted to see, like the Colosseum or Pompeii. I really want to go back and see everything that I missed.
What is your favorite television show/movie?
I have MANY favorite shows and movies, so I’m going to talk about one that doesn’t get enough recognition, Pushing Daisies. It’s fast-talking, vocabulary rich, full of puns, and hilarious. It follows the story of a man who owns a pie shop, and also has the power to wake anything dead with just a touch, but only for 1 minute. It was canceled after only 2 seasons, which is a tragedy!
What was the first album you ever purchased?
This is a surprisingly tough question, but I’ll blame that on growing up on the edge of the digital age. I think the first album I purchased with my own money was probably Taylor Swift’s Red, in 2012.
If there is one person dead or alive that you could have dinner with, who would it be and why?
My great grandparents, all of them. I met 3 of them, but only remember 2. They were all born between 1896 and 1911, and all lived such interesting lives! One great grandfather was an airplane electrician for WWII. Another great grandfather missed out on fighting in WWI because his whole unit came down with the Spanish Flu; this same great grandfather became a male flapper in the roaring 20s, complete with knee-length fur coat and ukulele. One great grandmother of mine played piano accompaniments to silent films in theaters in the 1920s, and spoke Latin. Another of my great grandmothers had to pay her way through college by teaching at the local school! I want to hear all their stories of what life was like as the entire world moved through some of the greatest upheavals and changes in history to date.
Congratulations!!

Many of the dogs there were extremely friendly and lovable, and received a lot of attention from the students. The humane society is always in need of donations (money, toys, food, blankets), cleaning supplies, and families able to adopt pets. Please consider adopting a pet from the Pennington County Humane Society for your next family addition, or volunteering your time to spend with these lovable animals.
