4/27/2020 Announcement
Parents and Students:
I am sure many of you heard the news that school will not be returning in its normal fashion this year. Under new directives from the state, we will continue our distance learning the remainder of the school year.
It saddens me that we will not see our students in our buildings and in our activities this spring. Please know we will do our best to keep our students learning under the circumstances. Hopefully all our efforts staying at home will protect society enough that we can return to a normal beginning of the school year next fall.
Learning Packets Reminders:
Packet 2 work is due this Thursday, April 30. Please finish up your work and drop it in the mail or in our drop container in the high school lobby. The high school lobby is open from 7:45 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. each day.
Packet 3 will be distributed during meal pick up on Thursday, April 30 and Friday, May 1. Any packets not picked up at meal sites those days will be mailed out to families on May 1 and should arrive by May 5.
Seniors: All your work is due in school on May 13. We have set aside May 13 from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. for seniors to return Chromebooks, text books, school work, and allow you to pick up any personal items left in your locker. Please bring your items to school and we will have tables set up in the commons area for collection.
Meals/Child Care:
Our meals program for families and our child care option for emergency/Tier II workers is open throughout the remainder of the school year. If you have questions about either program or need to sign up for these services, please call (218) 874-8530.
Free-Reduced Meals:
We will put a free/reduced lunch application in every packet. If your income has changed due to COVID 19 or the Stay at Home Order, please complete the form. Qualifying now will get you free meals at the beginning of school through October 1.
Our Students:
Please know our school and our community are keeping our school children in their hearts and minds. School is so much more than just the school work. Times like these remind us that seeing friends, receiving additional services, participating in activities, and the other experiences mean a lot. Not having access to some of those things can be difficult, possibly raising anxiety and frustration in our children.
I hope what comes out of all of this is that when we “return to normal” we emphasize the truly valuable items we need as a society. I hope people slow down a bit, not take as much for granted, allow more time for the important things, not be so demanding, cherish the moments of human connection snf share the spirit of helping one another,
We know this experience is different and hard on many of you. Please know our staff at MCC are here for you, supporting you, missing you, and will be here through the end of the school year.

Dear Families:
The Governor of Minnesota is issuing a shelter and place order beginning Friday, March 27. Schools will operate in a distance learning capacity until April 30. If measures work effectively, school staff would report at their sites to prepare to finish the rest of the school year at schools. Note this is subject to change based on the state’s work to fight the spread of COVID 19.
We have a distance learning plan in place. Mailings will go out at the end of the week providing school work for your children. They will include a parent letter which you can also find by going to the following link: https://bit.ly/2Uk21u8.
When you receive your packets next week, instructions will help you know how to communicate with your child’s teacher if you have questions or need any assistance with school work.
Our full distance learning plan is available here: https://bit.ly/3boe53o.
Please understand this is a work in progress and we will refine things along the way.

Meals:
We have 184 sign ups for daily meals. We served 362 meals today out of Newfolden Elementary. (Families picked up meals for 181 children receiving lunch today and breakfast for tomorrow).
Families were very good about following social distancing while they waited. We could use some grocery bags to bag meals. We have some bags ordered, but they won’t arrive for a couple of days. We ask that families picking up meals could bring in some extra plastic grocery bags that would be helpful.
Meals this week will continue being served from Newfolden Elementary.
Next week’s Meals (March 30-April 3)
If school remains closed, we will expand meals for next week. We will continue serving meals from Newfolden Elementary and we will also serve at the following locations: Holt - Nazareth Church (11:00 to 11:40 a.m.); Viking Elementary (11:00 to 11:40 a.m.); and Middle River Legacy Center (12:00 to 12:40 p.m.). When you call to sign up for next week's meals, office staff will ask you for your desired meal pick up location.
Virtual Spirit Week:
We will hold a Virtual Spirit Week each week. This is our way of helping our families stay connected, help children see their friends, and to have some fun while everyone is staying home.
Monday: National Puppy Day (Post picture of your pet or stuffed animal)
Tuesday: Crazy Sock Day
Wednesday: Super Hero Day
Thursday: Art Day
Friday Flannel Day
Please follow these posts and have fun participating.
School Work Mailings, general information:
Paraprofessionals and office staff are finalizing preparation of mailing the learning packets that will go out next week once we hear from the Department of Education and the Governor in regards to moving to distance learning for a period of time.
Each child in your home will receive a learning packet in the mail. Inside each packet will be instructions from your teacher(s) on how they plan to keep in contact with you, instructions on how to return the work when it is completed, and other general information.
We are sensitive that not all families have access to the internet or have technology at home. We were mindful of this in the development of our work packets.
The first round of work is designed to allow students to do independent work. This is to help students start successfully and allow time for families and the teachers to work out any communication issues that may come up.
Proper Health Practices:
Please follow all advice in regards to personal health and safety. Stay home if you are sick. Thoroughly and frequently wash hands using soap and water, cover sneezes and coughs, clean frequently touched surfaces, practice social distancing (3-6 feet separation) and stay away from large gatherings of people. We encourage you to keep your children at home.
We continue to be in this together as a school and a community. Thank you in advance for flexibility and understanding.
Stay healthy and well!
Superintendent Lund

Dear Parents,
The events surrounding the COVID 19 illness are constantly evolving and we appreciate your patience during this time as we have schools closed March 17-27 to prepare our school for the event the Governor extends the closure. Please know the safety of our students, staff, and community are of prime importance. We are cooperating fully with the Governor’s order to work on planning so we can provide educational resources in a distance learning arrangement in the event of a longer closure.
On Monday, we will use the time to prepare students and ensure they know expectations should this closure be extended. Students will bring home school supplies and any learning materials that may be essential during time off. We will not have any distance learning during the break but students who are behind and need to make up work can use these days off to get caught up following our existing policies. We will mail out learning packets with instructions if closure is extended.
We will make arrangements for families wishing to receive school meals during this break. This will be in place by Monday, March 23. The meals will be grab and go and need to be picked up in the Newfolden Elementary cafeteria. Lunch and breakfast food for next day would be provided. This is an opt-in opportunity. We ask families to call the district (by Thursday 3:30) to order meals for the following week. In the event of a longer closure, we would require families to call in by Thursday each week to reserve your lunches for the following week. Lunches are available for all school aged children. These meals will be billed according to your meal status (free/reduced and full).
If you are a member of the emergency services profession (law enforcement, fire department, EMTs and/or the medical profession (direct care staff) that has school aged children enrolled in our school system from kindergarten to age 12, we will have child care available for your school age children if you need the service starting Wednesday, March 18. Please contact Sarah in Viking Elementary (218) 523-4425 ASAP to reserve a spot if you qualify. Child care would be available from 7:45 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Please follow all advice in regards to personal health and safety.
